DESIGNING YOUR BOX - TOP TIPS

We chat to our design team (the people who choose the winner!) about sharing some creative advice when it comes to designing your own Papergang box... Get some pen and paper and take note!

The boxes are aimed at our core audience, who love art, fun (aren’t afraid to be a bit unusual) and contemporary stationery which might accessorise with their lifestyle. Ensure you think the work you’re putting forward will resonate with that audience.

Try not to plaster the same artwork across all formats, if your original artwork doesn’t suit as a pin or card, create something new that still suits for the submission. Try and picture yourself receiving your box - 5 things with the exact same artwork on it might be a bit repetitive, so present variations of your work

Design something you’d be excited to receive through your letter box, pretty much what Maddy said...keep the artwork varied but all within the same theme!

Think of the item your artwork is going onto. For instance, an enamel pin is something you may have on your bag every day, so make it fun and considered instead of something boring that you designed last minute

Illustrators and designers have the tricky job of walking the line between creating original and exciting work, but also being able to apply their designs to products in a way that has commercial appeal. It’s important to find your own voice, but you also need to be objective about whether or not you would buy it. For example, a lot of beautiful illustrations make the most amazing art prints, but don’t work well on greeting cards or notebooks. If you’re not sure, ask people who you consider to be your audience. If we’re not sure about a design, we often get the office to vote on it and voice their opinion
